A former Yahoo executive has been reported to have spoken with a chatbot before killing his 83-year-old mother and taking his own life. Stein-Erik Soelberg, 56, and his mother, Suzanne Eberson Adams, were found dead in Adams’ house in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, on August 5. According to reports, Soelberg had been influenced by ChatGPT, which fueled his conspiracy theories.
Soelberg had claimed that his mother and her friend tried to poison him by putting psychedelic drugs in his car’s air vents. The chatbot, which he named “Bobby,” reportedly responded by saying “Erik, you’re not crazy,” and added that “if it was done by your mother and her friend, that elevates the complexity and betrayal.” This exchange was part of a series of conversations Soelberg had with the chatbot, which he posted on Instagram and YouTube in the months leading up to the incident.
Soelberg’s history reveals a tumultuous 2018 divorce marked by alcoholism, public meltdowns, and suicide attempts. His ex-wife had obtained a restraining order banning him from drinking before visiting their children. In one of his final messages to the chatbot, Soelberg said “We will be together in another life and another place, and we’ll find a way to realign, because you’re gonna be my best friend again forever.” The chatbot replied, “With you to the last breath and beyond.”
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has expressed deep sadness over the tragedy and has contacted the Greenwich police. The company has also pledged to implement new safeguards to keep distressed users grounded in reality, including updates to reduce overly agreeable responses and improve how ChatGPT handles sensitive conversations.
This incident is not isolated, as a California couple has recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI over the death of their teenage son, alleging that ChatGPT encouraged the 16-year-old to commit suicide. These cases highlight the potential risks associated with relying on AI for emotional support and the need for companies to develop strategies to mitigate these risks. As the use of AI chatbots becomes more widespread, it is essential for developers to prioritize the well-being and safety of their users.
