The conduct of local government elections in Rivers State has paved the way for the return of democratic structures to the state, according to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Speaking after casting his ballot at Ward 9, Unit 7 in his hometown, Rumuepirikom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Wike expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for ensuring the elections took place as part of efforts to restore democracy to the state.
The elections, held on September 18, have removed a potential stumbling block that could have triggered a clash between the executive and legislature, even after the state of emergency is lifted. Wike noted that the polls have cleared the way for democratic leadership at the local government level, which is essential for the release of funds from the Federal Government. He cited the constitution, stating that there is no provision for caretaker committees at the local government level.
Wike explained that without the elections, funds meant for the local governments would not be released, highlighting the importance of the polls. He also addressed concerns about the legality of the election, stating that no election was conducted on October 5, 2024, following the nullification of the process by the Supreme Court. Wike expressed confidence that the current election was conducted in line with the law, adding that the Supreme Court’s nullification of the previous election was due to its illegality.
The Minister commended the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, for successfully organizing the polls. Regarding the low turnout of voters observed in several polling units, Wike attributed it to the typical low participation in commercial areas, compared to residential communities. He noted that rural areas often record greater participation, while non-indigenes in the state rarely take part in local government elections because they do not have their representatives on the ballot.
The successful conduct of the local government elections in Rivers State is a significant step towards restoring democratic structures in the state. With the polls clearing the way for democratic leadership at the local government level, the state can now look forward to the release of funds from the Federal Government, which is essential for development and governance. The elections have also demonstrated the commitment of the government to upholding the constitution and ensuring that democratic processes are followed. As the state moves forward, it is expected that the newly elected local government leaders will play a crucial role in shaping the state’s development and governance.
