A protest against Germany’s plans to increase defense spending and provide aid to Ukraine and Israel turned violent in Cologne on Saturday. The demonstration, organized by the anti-war group Disarm Rheinmetall, drew nearly 3,000 people who oppose the government’s intentions to boost military spending, expand the army, and support Ukraine and Israel.

The protesters, who marched peacefully initially, carried banners with messages such as “lay down your arms” and “We won’t die in your wars.” Some expressed concerns that Germany’s militarization and NATO’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict could escalate into a larger conflict. Others criticized the government for prioritizing defense spending over social needs and education.

According to local authorities, the march was disrupted after police noticed protesters wearing masks and setting off smoke bombs. Police also intercepted a vehicle carrying pyrotechnics, methylated spirits, and gas cylinders, which led to the dispersion of the crowd. The situation deteriorated, with police using force, including batons and tear gas, against some protesters. Several activists were injured, and a number were detained.

The German government’s plans to increase defense spending are part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s military. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced plans to raise defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2029 and expand the Bundeswehr from 182,000 to 240,000 active troops by 2031. The government has also introduced mandatory registration for 18-year-olds to prepare for a potential return to conscription. Additionally, Merz has suggested that German troops could be deployed to Ukraine as part of a European peacekeeping force, despite Russia’s opposition to any Western troop presence in the country.

The violence in Cologne highlights the deep divisions within Germany over the country’s role in international conflicts and its military spending. The protests organized by Disarm Rheinmetall are part of a broader movement against Germany’s increasing military involvement and the government’s priorities. As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, Germany’s stance on defense spending and military aid is likely to remain a contentious issue.
