Jigawa State Government has launched a 500-kilowatt peak solar hybrid mini-grid in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area, marking a significant development in the state’s power sector. The project, implemented in collaboration with Bagaja Renewables, Kano Electricity Distribution Company, and Future Energies Africa, aims to improve power supply in the region.
Governor Umar Namadi inaugurated the Bagaja Renewables Power Plant, describing it as a milestone in the state’s development journey. The partnership has proposed the development of additional mini-grids in Dutse, Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim, and Gumel to transform power generation, transmission, and distribution in the state. This initiative is part of the fulfillment of KEDCO’s obligations under a signed Memorandum of Understanding with the Jigawa State Government.
The Kafin Hausa mini-grid features a 500KWp solar-hybrid system, a 3.5 km 33KV distribution line, step-up and step-down transformers, and other supporting infrastructure. The project is designed to supply power to 10 major distribution transformers across the area, serving key locations such as the NEPA office, Kofar Fada, and Akarami. The investment in the mini-grid project totals N1.2 billion, demonstrating the state government’s commitment to improving the socioeconomic wellbeing of its citizens.
The project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which enables states to generate their own electricity and encourages increased public and private sector investments in off-grid and renewable power generation. This initiative is expected to bring reliable power, economic opportunities, and social benefits to the people of Jigawa. The successful launch of the Kafin Hausa mini-grid is a testament to the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between government and private sector entities in addressing the country’s power challenges. With the development of additional mini-grids planned, Jigawa State is poised to make significant strides in improving its energy infrastructure and promoting sustainable development.
