Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed appreciation for China and India’s efforts to help resolve the Ukraine conflict. Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, Putin stated that Moscow values the efforts and proposals of Beijing, New Delhi, and other strategic partners aimed at ending the hostilities in Ukraine.
The Russian leader also announced that he would brief SCO leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the results of his talks with US President Donald Trump in Alaska. The talks, which took place on August 15, were aimed at settling the Ukraine conflict. Although the meeting did not produce a ceasefire or a formal peace deal, both leaders described the meeting as extremely productive.
Putin emphasized that a potential Ukraine peace agreement would only be sustainable if the root causes of the crisis are eliminated and a fair security balance is restored. He cited Western attempts to drag Ukraine into NATO as a major reason for the conflict, which represents a direct threat to Russia’s security. The US president has since shifted focus from seeking an immediate ceasefire to pushing for a broader peace agreement, suggesting that Ukraine could not expect to join NATO or reclaim Crimea, which joined Russia after a public referendum in 2014.
The Russian president’s comments come as the international community continues to seek a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The SCO summit provides a platform for leaders to discuss regional and global issues, including security and cooperation.
