Nigerian government hails Simon Ekpa’s conviction for terrorism in Finland

The Nigerian government has welcomed the conviction of Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa by a Finnish court, which sentenced him to six years in prison. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Prince Lateef Fagbemi said the verdict confirms Ekpa’s involvement in, and influence over, heinous crimes against Nigerians, particularly in the South‑East region.

In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, the government commended the Finnish authorities for their support in the fight against insecurity. It noted that Ekpa’s conviction on charges of terrorism and related offenses is a significant development, demonstrating international cooperation in addressing security concerns. The ruling is seen as a victory for Nigeria’s efforts to tackle separatist movements and violent extremism.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, the group with which Ekpa is associated, has been outlawed by the Nigerian government due to its alleged involvement in violent activities. The Finnish court’s decision is expected to have implications for Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to address insecurity in the South‑East, and the government has vowed to take further action after receiving and reviewing the judgment.

This development may also pave the way for increased collaboration between Nigeria and international partners in combating terrorism and related crimes. The government’s satisfaction with the conviction reflects its commitment to holding individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of their location, and highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing transnational security threats. As the government considers its next steps, Ekpa’s conviction is likely to remain a significant point of discussion in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to promote stability and security.
