Nigeria Debt Committee Formed For Foreign Missions

Nigerian Govt sets up committee to address foreign missions’ debt

The Federal Government of Nigeria has established a committee to address the debt profile of the country’s foreign missions. According to Kimiebi I. Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the move aims to ensure judicious utilization and prudent management of funds remitted to these missions, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s financial discipline policy.

The committee’s efforts have already led to significant progress, with over 80% of available funds cleared for payments, based on responses from missions and provided evidence. Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has engaged the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation to secure refunds for the shortfall in mission allocations in the 2024 fiscal year, resulting from foreign exchange differentials associated with the new monetary policy and exchange rate harmonization.

Nigeria’s diplomatic missions abroad have faced financial and operational challenges, mirroring the economic situation in the country. The missions’ financial struggles stem from budgetary limitations over the years, leading to shortfalls in allocations and impacting their ability to fulfill their core diplomatic and consular mandates effectively. The Federal Government has acknowledged these challenges, which have hindered the optimal functioning of many missions abroad.

The financial situation of Nigeria’s foreign missions has been a longstanding concern, exacerbated by the recall of substantive heads of missions on September 1, 2023. The government’s decision to establish a committee to address the debt profile of these missions demonstrates its commitment to resolving the issue and ensuring the effective operation of Nigeria’s diplomatic presence abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ efforts to tackle the financial challenges facing the country’s foreign missions are crucial to maintaining Nigeria’s diplomatic influence and promoting its interests abroad. As the committee continues its work, it is essential to monitor progress and address any remaining challenges to ensure the long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s diplomatic missions. The successful management of these missions will have significant implications for the country’s international relations and its ability to engage with the global community effectively.
