Nigerian Govt sets up committee to address foreign missions’ debt

The Federal Government of Nigeria has established a committee to address the debt profile of the country’s foreign missions. According to Kimiebi I. Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the move aims to ensure judicious utilization and prudent management of funds remitted to these missions, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s financial‑discipline policy.

The committee’s efforts have already yielded significant progress: more than 80 % of available funds have been cleared for payment, based on responses from missions and the evidence they provided. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has engaged the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation to secure refunds for the shortfall in mission allocations for the 2024 fiscal year, which arose from foreign‑exchange differentials linked to the new monetary policy and exchange‑rate harmonisation.

Nigeria’s diplomatic missions abroad have faced financial and operational challenges that mirror the country’s broader economic situation. Over the years, budgetary limitations have created shortfalls in allocations, hampering the missions’ ability to fulfil their core diplomatic and consular mandates effectively. The Federal Government has acknowledged these challenges, noting that they have hindered the optimal functioning of many missions abroad.

The financial situation of Nigeria’s foreign missions has been a longstanding concern, further exacerbated by the recall of substantive heads of missions on 1 September 2023. By establishing a committee to address the debt profile of these missions, the government demonstrates its commitment to resolving the issue and ensuring the effective operation of Nigeria’s diplomatic presence abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ efforts to tackle these financial challenges are crucial for maintaining Nigeria’s diplomatic influence and promoting its interests overseas. As the committee continues its work, monitoring progress and addressing any remaining obstacles will be essential to ensure the long‑term sustainability of Nigeria’s diplomatic missions. Successful management of these missions will have significant implications for the country’s international relations and its ability to engage effectively with the global community.
