A group of prominent leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the party to maintain its 2021 convention’s zoning arrangements, specifically retaining the position of National Chairman in the North Central region. This demand was made during a meeting in Abuja on Monday night, attended by notable figures such as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and former governors of various states.
The gathering, held under the auspices of Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP, also requested the conduct of a fresh South-East Zonal Congress, as well as congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra States, and a local government congress in Ekiti State. Furthermore, they emphasized the need to respect the outcome of the South-South Congress held in Calabar, Cross River State, on February 22, 2025, which was recognized by the court.
The leaders, including Wike, PDP National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, and former governors Okezie Ikpeazu, Samuel Ortom, Ayo Fayose, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, expressed concerns that failure to meet these demands could result in the disenfranchisement of party members and render the National Convention invalid. The meeting was also attended by House of Representatives Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and various serving and former members of the National Assembly.
In a communique read by former Benue State governor Samuel Ortom, the leaders outlined their demands and emphasized the importance of adhering to the party’s zoning arrangements. The meeting highlights the ongoing internal dynamics within the PDP, as the party prepares for its national convention. The outcome of these demands and the subsequent actions of the party will be crucial in determining the direction of the PDP in the coming months.
The PDP has been navigating internal conflicts and power struggles, and this latest development adds to the complexities surrounding the party’s leadership and zoning arrangements. As the party moves forward, it will be essential to address these concerns and work towards a unified front to maintain its relevance in the country’s political landscape. The next steps for the PDP will be closely watched, as the party seeks to strengthen its position and prepare for future elections.
