The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State has made allegations against former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing them of sponsoring political thugs responsible for recent violent incidents in the state.
According to a statement by Yahaya Sarki, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Nasir Idris, hoodlums allegedly loyal to the ADC stormed Birnin Kebbi during Malami’s recent visit, attacking the APC’s secretariat and vandalizing billboards of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Idris. The party claims that the attackers also destroyed campaign posters and fired gunshots, causing fear among residents.
The APC has condemned the incident, viewing it as an attempt to disrupt the state’s long-standing culture of peaceful politics. The party is calling on security agencies to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators. The ADC, however, maintains that Malami’s visit was for a condolence mission, a claim contradicted by the ensuing violence, according to APC supporters and residents.
Witnesses allege that some of the thugs were brought in from neighboring states and were armed with dangerous weapons. This development has raised concerns among political observers, who warn that Kebbi, traditionally known for its peaceful political landscape, may be sliding into hostilities ahead of the 2027 elections.
The incident has underscored the need for security agencies to intensify investigations into the matter, aiming to restore confidence among residents and prevent further violence. As the political climate in Kebbi State continues to evolve, the actions of political parties and their supporters will be closely monitored to ensure that peace and stability are maintained. The upcoming elections have brought the issue of political violence to the forefront, highlighting the importance of addressing such incidents promptly and effectively to safeguard the democratic process.
