The United States has approved a $32.5 million funding release to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Nigeria, aimed at providing critical food assistance and nutrition support to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country’s North-East and North-West regions. This significant contribution was announced by the US embassy in Nigeria through a statement on its website.
According to the embassy, the allocated funds will enable the WFP to deliver essential food aid and nutrition support to approximately 764,205 beneficiaries across conflict-affected areas in North-East and North-West Nigeria. The assistance program will also include complementary nutrition top-ups for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, as well as 43,235 children, utilizing electronic food vouchers.
The ongoing insecurity in parts of Nigeria has resulted in a substantial displacement of people, putting millions at risk of food shortages. The North-East and North-West regions have been particularly affected, with many individuals relying on external assistance to meet their basic nutritional needs. The US government’s contribution to the WFP is expected to play a vital role in addressing this crisis, providing a lifeline to those most in need.
The World Food Programme Nigeria will utilize the $32.5 million contribution to implement its food assistance and nutrition support programs, focusing on the most vulnerable populations, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and other displaced individuals. The electronic food voucher system will allow beneficiaries to access essential food items, helping to alleviate hunger and malnutrition.
This significant funding release reinforces the US government’s commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in Nigeria, particularly in regions affected by conflict and insecurity. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community’s response will remain crucial in addressing the ongoing food security challenges faced by IDPs in Nigeria. The US government’s contribution to the WFP is a critical step towards mitigating the effects of food shortages and promoting stability in the region.
