Nigeria warns against illegal migration to Libya

NiDCOM warns Nigerians against illegal migration, 'Its a voluntary suicide' — Daily Nigerian

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has cautioned citizens against embarking on illegal migration, likening such journeys to “voluntary suicide missions.” Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of NiDCOM, issued this warning while receiving Mercy Oluwabanga, a 24-year-old woman who was rescued from Libya. Oluwabanga had sent a distress video seeking help from Dabiri-Erewa after facing extreme hardship in Libya.

NiDCOM, in collaboration with the Nigerian Community in Libya and the Trinity Foundation, facilitated Oluwabanga’s rescue. A former business administration student at the University of Ilorin, Oluwabanga had dropped out in 2018 and traveled to Libya via illegal routes in December 2021. She endured severe mistreatment from her employers, who frequently threatened her and failed to pay for her services.

After Oluwabanga’s distress call, Dabiri-Erewa warned against the dangers of illegal migration, emphasizing that it often leads to slavery. The NiDCOM chairman expressed gratitude that Oluwabanga was rescued and safe, acknowledging that many others have not been as fortunate. Dabiri-Erewa attributed Oluwabanga’s rescue to the fact that she had escaped to a private camp, where she could be located.

Oluwabanga has expressed her desire to resume her education, and NiDCOM has pledged to support her through the NELFUND scheme. The commission’s assistance will enable her to further her education and rebuild her life. Oluwabanga has also appreciated the Federal Government’s swift response to her distress call and has promised to join the advocacy against illegal migration, aiming to deter others from embarking on similar journeys.

The rescue of Oluwabanga highlights the risks associated with illegal migration and the importance of cautioning citizens against such endeavors. As NiDCOM continues to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal migration, it is crucial for citizens to prioritize safe and legal migration channels. By doing so, they can avoid the risks of exploitation, abuse, and slavery that often accompany illegal migration.
