US Visa Revocations Spark Outrage Among Nigerians

The United States government has defended its recent decision to revoke valid visas held by Nigerian citizens, citing national security concerns and the need to protect its citizens. The move has affected various individuals, including students, business professionals, and frequent travelers, who were informed of the cancellations without prior notice.

According to the US Embassy in Nigeria, the revocations are part of a security measure aimed at upholding the country’s national security and guaranteeing the safety of its citizens. The Embassy invoked the legal mandates under the US Immigration and Nationality Act, which empowers it to revoke visas linked to potential ineligibilities.

A spokesperson for the Embassy stated that the revocations are being carried out on a large scale as part of efforts to secure America’s borders. The spokesperson cited Section 221(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows the Secretary of State and consular officers to revoke visas at any time if there is an indication of potential ineligibility.

The US government has also announced social media checks for visa applicants as part of the criteria for qualification for visa issuance. Additionally, the US Mission has cautioned its citizens in Nigeria against unnecessary travel to military and government facilities due to continued security concerns.

The security alert recommends precautions such as avoiding large gatherings and reviewing personal security plans for US citizens in Nigeria. The alert follows prior similar advisories citing incidents near such facilities in recent months. The US Embassy has warned its citizens to avoid areas such as the Abuja National Mosque and the Mogadishu Barracks, and to exercise caution during events like the Ashura Commemoration.

The latest advisory, dated September 2, 2025, links the restrictions to broader security concerns shaped by global developments, adding another layer of caution for both US citizens and diplomatic staff in Nigeria. The US government has urged its citizens to stay alert in public places, particularly in locations and venues where Westerners, expatriates, and government officials frequent.

The visa revocations and security alerts have raised concerns among Nigerians and highlight the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between the two countries to address security concerns. The US government’s efforts to protect its citizens and national security interests have significant implications for international relations and global security.
