The United Opposition, a coalition of six parties that intends to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections, has appointed Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi as its spokesperson and Head of Secretariat. The announcement was made on Wednesday evening by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after a strategy meeting with other coalition leaders.
Dr. Kituyi, a former UN trade chief, brings extensive experience in governance and trade diplomacy to the role. He served as Secretary‑General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) from 2013 to 2021 and previously held senior positions in the Kenyan government, including Minister for Trade and Industry. He has also chaired the Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee and led trade negotiations at the World Trade Organization, earning a reputation as a strong debater and negotiator.
The coalition includes Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party, Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party, Jubilee, and others. Its leaders—Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Martha Karua—have been meeting regularly to consolidate their ranks, project unity, and plan joint activities such as a rally in Kisii next week. They are also working to craft a common ticket for the 2027 elections.
The appointment of Dr. Kituyi is seen as a move to elevate the coalition’s image and provide strategic direction. His background in international trade and governance is expected to bring credibility, while his expertise should help shape the coalition’s strategy and messaging as it prepares to challenge the incumbent president.
