Kituyi appointed United Opposition spokesperson

The United Opposition, a coalition of parties aiming to challenge President William Ruto in 2027, has appointed Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi as its spokesperson and Head of Secretariat. The announcement was made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday evening, following a strategy meeting with other leaders.

Dr. Kituyi, a former UN trade chief, brings extensive experience in governance and trade diplomacy to the role. He served as the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) from 2013 to 2021 and held senior positions in the Kenyan government, including Minister for Trade and Industry.

The coalition, which comprises six parties, including Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party, Kalonzo’s Wiper, and Jubilee, aims to present a united front against President Ruto in the 2027 elections. The appointment of Dr. Kituyi is seen as a move to elevate the coalition’s image and provide strategic direction.

Dr. Kituyi’s background in international trade and governance is expected to bring credibility to the coalition. He has a proven track record as a strong debater and negotiator, having chaired the Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee and led trade negotiations at the World Trade Organization.

The coalition’s leaders, including Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Martha Karua, have been meeting regularly to consolidate their ranks and project unity. The group is planning joint activities, including a rally in Kisii next week, and is working to craft a common ticket for the 2027 elections.

The appointment of Dr. Kituyi is a significant development in Kenya’s political landscape, as the coalition seeks to challenge the incumbent president. With his experience and expertise, Dr. Kituyi is expected to play a key role in shaping the coalition’s strategy and messaging in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
