The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) held an emergency meeting in Lagos on Thursday, attended by national executives from across the country. The closed-door meeting, which lasted from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, was not open to journalists. Key party leaders, including Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, National Chairman Dr. Agbo Major, and Secretary General Dr. Oginni Olaposi, were in attendance.
According to Dr. Aniebonam, who is also the founder of the NNPP, the meeting discussed urgent issues affecting the party nationwide. A primary concern was the delay by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in uploading the party’s new national executives, which is necessary for the party’s active participation in elections. The party has written to INEC multiple times and demanded that elections be halted until the issue is resolved to avoid potential litigations that could impact elections in Nigeria.
Dr. Aniebonam expressed regret that despite court directives, INEC has not taken the necessary steps. The party is insisting that INEC must stop all activities, including elections, until the NNPP’s correct logo and new leadership are recognized. Other issues discussed during the meeting included the unauthorized use of the party’s name by expelled members and approaches from presidential aspirants interested in using the NNPP platform for the 2027 election.
The NNPP has announced that it will present its own candidate for the 2027 election and is open to collaborating with like-minded parties. However, the party will not give its ticket to a single aspirant, as was the case in 2023. Instead, all aspirants will undergo the party’s primaries and be chosen by members. The party also plans to launch a nationwide membership drive soon.
The NNPP’s concerns about INEC’s delay highlight the importance of resolving internal party issues and ensuring that all parties can participate fairly in the electoral process. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 election, the NNPP’s efforts to establish a strong presence and competitive candidate will be closely watched. The party’s commitment to democratic principles, such as primaries and member participation, is a positive step towards strengthening its internal processes and increasing its chances of success in future elections.
