Troops of Operation Delta Safe have thwarted oil theft operations valued at N545,872,819 in August, according to the Defence Headquarters. The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, revealed this information during a monthly military operations briefing in Abuja.
During the operation, troops recovered a substantial quantity of stolen petroleum products, including 619,236 litres of crude oil, 106,147 litres of illegally refined diesel, 5,785 litres of kerosene, and 2,650 litres of petrol. The successful operation also led to the destruction of 97 illegal refining sites and the confiscation of over 488 pieces of equipment, such as storage tanks, boats, and cooking ovens.
In addition to the recovery of stolen products and equipment, 17 suspects were apprehended across Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa states. The suspects were found in possession of arms, ammunition, explosives, and N1.7 million in cash. The operation demonstrates the Nigerian military’s commitment to combating oil theft and related criminal activities in the region.
