The Ayen community in Edo State’s Uhumwode Local Government Area has called on the state government and security agencies to address the persistent insecurity and alleged unlawful arrests of its members. According to a statement by Comrade Segun Babs, the community’s spokesperson, the area has experienced eight years of insecurity, marked by killings and kidnappings that have affected residents.
The community had previously reported security threats, but feels its concerns were not adequately addressed. Residents are fearful of attempts by armed individuals to seize land in the area. While the state government’s recent efforts to reduce overall insecurity have been acknowledged, fresh incidents have occurred, prompting the community to seek intervention.
In a recent operation, five suspects were arrested, with three later released. However, the community alleges that some of the released suspects returned, only to be repelled by military personnel responding to the incident. During follow-up operations, community leaders were detained and taken to Abuja, with some members still in custody. The community is seeking transparent investigations within the jurisdiction of the Edo State Police Command.
The Ayen community is urging the Edo State government and the state Police Commissioner to intervene, ensure due process for those detained, and restore lasting peace to the area. The community’s concerns are compounded by the fear of renewed attacks, highlighting the need for effective security measures to protect residents and their properties.
The situation in Ayen is part of the broader security challenges facing Edo State, which has seen efforts by the government to address insecurity in recent times. The community’s appeal for help underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between the government, security agencies, and local communities to achieve lasting peace and security. As the situation develops, the Edo State government and security agencies are expected to take concrete steps to address the community’s concerns and ensure the safety of residents.
