Senator Aminu Tambuwal of Borno South has expressed his willingness to support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over President Bola Tinubu in a potential 2027 presidential election. In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Tambuwal stated that he would not support Tinubu, citing a noticeable change in the president’s stance since their days of advocating for democracy.
Tambuwal, a former governor of Sokoto State, emphasized that he would make a decision if Atiku and another candidate, Obi, were to run against Tinubu. He also reaffirmed his commitment to not joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing disagreement with the party’s governance style. “I will not join APC, it’s a personal decision and I do not believe in the way the country is being run currently,” he said.
The senator recalled warning Nigerians about the potential hardships under a Tinubu administration during the 2023 presidential election campaign. As the director-general of Atiku’s campaign, Tambuwal traveled the country, urging citizens to reconsider voting for Tinubu and the APC. He expressed that his current stance is not a result of disappointment, but rather a confirmation of his earlier concerns.
Tambuwal’s decision to leave the APC in August 2018 was motivated by his reservations about the party’s direction, which he believed would lead the country to its current state. His comments come as Nigerians continue to navigate the challenges of the current administration, with many seeking alternative leadership options. As the political landscape evolves, Tambuwal’s statement may have significant implications for the 2027 presidential election and the country’s future.
