Zamfara PDP Dismisses APC Allegations on Bandit Sponsoring

The Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected allegations made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that Governor Dauda Lawal is sponsoring bandits in the state. In a statement released on Saturday, the PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Haliru Andi, described the allegations as unfounded and lacking merit.

According to Andi, the APC’s accusation is a diversionary tactic, as the party itself presided over a period of heightened banditry in Zamfara during the tenure of former Governor Bello Matawalle. The PDP claims that under the APC’s watch, villages were frequently attacked, and funds earmarked for security were allegedly misappropriated. Andi further alleged that APC leaders engaged with bandit leaders, granting them a level of legitimacy while the people of Zamfara suffered losses.

In contrast, the PDP asserts that Governor Lawal has taken concrete steps to address the insecurity in the state since assuming office. Lawal inherited a state grappling with a severe crisis but has worked to rebuild confidence, equip security agencies, and establish the Community Protection Guards (CPG). The PDP has urged residents to disregard the APC’s claims, emphasizing Governor Lawal’s commitment to ending banditry in Zamfara.

The allegations and counter-allegations come amidst ongoing concerns about insecurity in Zamfara State. The region has faced significant challenges related to banditry, which has resulted in loss of life and displacement of communities. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the state government and political parties will work together to address the pressing issue of insecurity.

The PDP’s response highlights the deep-seated political tensions in Zamfara State, where accusations of complicity in banditry have become a point of contention between the ruling party and the opposition. As the state navigates this complex security landscape, the government’s efforts to restore peace and stability will be closely watched by residents and international observers alike.
