A Nigerian lawmaker, Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, has officially announced his departure from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), following his expulsion by the party’s Kwankwasiyya loyalist faction. Kofa, who represents the Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, described his removal as a “rude shock” in a statement released on Saturday.
The expulsion came after Kofa made comments during a television interview that were deemed anti-party by the NNPP. However, Kofa defended his statements, asserting that they did not constitute anti-party activity and were in line with the party’s core principles of allowing dissenting views. He also expressed disappointment at not being given the opportunity to defend himself before the party’s decision was made.
Kofa denied allegations of non-payment of dues, stating that he was willing to settle any outstanding obligations and requested the party to provide him with an invoice. Despite the expulsion, Kofa expressed gratitude for the support he received during his time in the NNPP and called for civility as both parties part ways.
The lawmaker, who previously served as Director-General of the Tinubu support groups before joining the NNPP in 2022, announced that he would consult widely before deciding on his next political move. Kofa’s departure from the NNPP marks a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly given his background and experience in the country’s political arena.
The NNPP’s decision to expel Kofa highlights the ongoing tensions and power struggles within the party. As Kofa navigates his next steps, it remains to be seen how his departure will impact the party’s dynamics and his own political future. With Nigeria’s political landscape continuing to evolve, Kofa’s decision to leave the NNPP is likely to have significant implications for the country’s political landscape.
