Fola recalls arrest on first day in Lagos pursuing music career

Afrobeats singer Folarin Odunlami, known professionally as Fola, has shared a challenging experience from his early days in Lagos, where he pursued a career in music. In a recent interview with The Beat 99.9 FM Lagos, Fola recounted being arrested and spending a night at a police station on the day he relocated to the city in 2018.

This incident, according to Fola, was demoralizing and almost led him to abandon his musical ambitions. However, he credits his resilience for helping him adapt to the demanding lifestyle of Lagos. Despite the initial hardship, Fola has managed to thrive in the city’s vibrant music scene.

Fola’s breakthrough came after he was signed to Dagbani Republik, a label owned by renowned singer Bella Shmurda, in October 2024. His debut single, “Alone,” has garnered significant attention, leading to collaborations with prominent Afrobeats artists such as Wizkid and Kizz Daniel. These partnerships have further boosted Fola’s profile, introducing his music to a broader audience.

Fola’s experience serves as a testament to the challenges faced by emerging artists in Lagos, a city known for its competitive music industry. His ability to persevere and capitalize on opportunities has enabled him to make a name for himself in the Afrobeats genre. With his growing reputation, Fola is likely to continue making waves in the music scene, both locally and internationally.

The Afrobeats genre has gained significant popularity worldwide, with many Nigerian artists achieving global recognition. Fola’s story highlights the importance of determination and adaptability for success in this field. As he continues to release new music and collaborate with other artists, his fan base is expected to expand, contributing to the genre’s increasing global influence.
