A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olusola Salau, has announced his decision to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress. Salau, who also serves as the South-West Chairman of The Alternative, a national opposition movement coalition, made this statement on Monday. He expressed his disappointment with the low turnout of voters and the outcome of the recent by-election in Remo, citing that there is no future for the PDP in Ogun State.
In a statement obtained by the press, Salau revealed that he has made up his mind to join the APC, along with his followers, to contribute to the party’s growth and help improve the state. He emphasized that his decision to leave the PDP was based on his assessment of the party’s prospects in the region. Despite his defection, Salau will retain his position as the South-West Chairman of The Alternative, which aims to promote ideological clarity, integrity, and transparency in Nigeria’s democracy.
Salau’s statement highlighted his past contributions to the PDP, including his role as a strong mobilization expert for a House of Representatives election and his early support for a gubernatorial candidate. However, he has now declared that he is no longer a member of the PDP and is looking forward to working with the APC and the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun.
According to reports, Salau has already initiated discussions with the APC, having visited the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Biyi Adeleye, to finalize the defection arrangements. A second meeting is scheduled to take place on Wednesday. The development is expected to bolster the APC’s presence in Ogun State, while dealing a blow to the PDP’s fortunes in the region. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Salau’s defection is likely to have significant implications for the future of politics in the state.
