Olusola Salau, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and South‑West Chairman of The Alternative—a national opposition movement coalition—announced on Monday that he will defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In a statement obtained by the press, Salau cited his disappointment with the low voter turnout and the outcome of the recent by‑election in Remo, arguing that there is no future for the PDP in Ogun State. He said he has decided to join the APC with his followers to contribute to the party’s growth and help improve the state, emphasizing that his decision is based on an assessment of the PDP’s prospects in the region.
Despite his defection, Salau will retain his position as South‑West Chairman of The Alternative, which seeks to promote ideological clarity, integrity, and transparency in Nigeria’s democracy. He highlighted his past contributions to the PDP, including his role as a strong mobilization expert for a House of Representatives election and his early support for a gubernatorial candidate. However, he now declares that he is no longer a member of the PDP and looks forward to working with the APC and Ogun State’s Executive Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.
According to reports, Salau has already begun discussions with the APC, having visited the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Biyi Adeleye, to finalize the defection arrangements. A second meeting is scheduled for Wednesday. This development is expected to bolster the APC’s presence in Ogun State while dealing a blow to the PDP’s fortunes in the region. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Salau’s defection is likely to have significant implications for the future of politics in the state.
