Governors Control Elections in Nigeria

Govs decide who goes to Senate, House of Reps, state assemblies - Athan Achonu

Athan Achonu, a former Labour Party governorship candidate in Imo State, has revealed that state governors exert significant control over the selection of representatives to the Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly. According to Achonu, this influence is made possible by the governors’ control over local governments.

In an interview on News Central’s Breakfast Central, Achonu emphasized the need for true democracy in Nigeria, which he believes can only be achieved when governors cease to control local governments. He stated that the current system has led to a lack of faith in institutions, with the judiciary and legislature facing criticism.

Achonu highlighted the existence of structures designed to protect the country’s interests and check governance, such as the National Assembly’s oversight role in monitoring ministries. He also mentioned the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), which is responsible for ensuring transparency in contract awards. However, he noted that these structures are often undermined by the concentration of power in the hands of governors and other high-ranking officials.

The former lawmaker drew parallels with the tenure of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, during which governors were more accountable to the people. Achonu argued that the current system, in which governors control local governments, has led to a lack of genuine campaigning and accountability.

The implications of Achonu’s statements are significant, as they suggest that the democratic process in Nigeria is being undermined by the influence of state governors. If governors are able to control the selection of representatives to the national and state legislatures, it raises concerns about the representation of citizens’ interests and the potential for corruption.

As Nigeria continues to navigate its democratic journey, the need for reform and greater accountability is becoming increasingly pressing. Achonu’s comments highlight the importance of addressing the issues of governance and representation, and ensuring that power is held accountable to the people. By doing so, Nigeria can work towards a more transparent and democratic system, in which citizens’ voices are truly represented.
