APC expects more governors to join party ahead of 2027 election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is expecting more state governors and lawmakers to join the party ahead of the 2027 general election in Nigeria. This was revealed by the National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwatda, during the 12th expanded stakeholders’ meeting of the party in Bayelsa State. According to Yilwatda, the anticipated defections will bolster President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in 2027.

Yilwatda, who was represented by the Deputy National Chairman (South), Emma Eneukwu, attributed the expected defections to President Tinubu’s performance in governance, which he said is attracting key political figures from opposition parties. The chairman stated that the party’s doors are open to those willing to join and contribute to the country’s progress.

The recent defections of Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and Akwa Ibom State governor, Umo Eno, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC were cited as examples of the president’s growing influence. Yilwatda urged party members in Bayelsa to remain united to ensure a decisive victory in the 2027 election.

The APC chairman noted that the South-South region has demonstrated “political maturity” by aligning with the party, with governors from the zone abandoning their old parties to support the president’s vision. He added that leaders from the South-South to the South-East regions are making informed decisions to back the president due to his determination to take Nigeria to greater heights.

The anticipated influx of new members is expected to strengthen the APC’s position ahead of the 2027 general election. As Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve, the APC’s efforts to consolidate support and attract new members may have significant implications for the country’s future. With the election approaching, the party’s ability to maintain unity and build on its current momentum will be crucial in determining its success.
