Peter Obi’s Single-Term Proposal Slammed as Impossible

No one else in ADC coalition apart from Peter Obi' - Mark replies Abdullahi

A Commissioner-designate in Edo State, Kassim Afegbua, has criticized the 2023 Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for proposing to serve only one term if elected president in 2027. Afegbua described the proposal as “laughable” and “impossible” during an appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ program on Wednesday.

According to Afegbua, four years is insufficient time to implement meaningful transformations in Nigeria. He emphasized that one term is inadequate to effect positive change in the country. Afegbua cautioned against promises that seem unrealistic, stating that nobody should be led to believe that a single term is enough to address Nigeria’s complex challenges.

The comments come as Nigeria prepares for its next presidential election, scheduled for 2027. Peter Obi’s proposal has sparked debate about the feasibility of achieving significant progress within a short timeframe. Afegbua’s remarks highlight the concerns of some stakeholders who believe that more time is needed to implement and sustain reforms.

Nigeria has faced numerous development challenges, including economic growth, infrastructure development, and security concerns. The country’s presidents have typically served two terms, with some arguing that this allows for more continuity and stability in governance. However, others contend that term limits can help prevent the concentration of power and promote democratic accountability.

The discussion around Peter Obi’s proposal is likely to continue as the 2027 election approaches. Afegbua’s comments reflect the skepticism of some observers who question the practicality of a single-term presidency in addressing Nigeria’s deep-seated challenges. As the country navigates its democratic process, the debate surrounding term limits and their potential impact on governance is expected to remain a topic of interest.
