FCTA demolishes 30 structures at River Park Estate

FCTA begins move to clear shanties in Durumi, Area 1 axes — Daily Nigerian

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has demolished over 30 sub-structures at the River Park Estate in Abuja, citing violations of planning regulations. According to the Director of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, the affected developers had proceeded with construction despite the withdrawal of their lease agreement and recommendations to revert undeveloped plots to the FCTA.

A ministerial committee, led by Salman Dako, had submitted a report to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, recommending the revocation of undeveloped plots due to the expiration and breach of the Development Lease Agreement (DLA). The committee also directed that holders of previous “customary” titles who had developed their plots in accordance with applicable regulations be permitted to retain their titles.

Galadima stated that the FCTA had received reports of developers working rapidly to develop vacant plots, prompting the agency to serve them with a notice to stop work. Upon discovering that the developers had ignored the notice, the FCTA removed the structures, including over 30 foundations that had been excavated. Galadima emphasized that any new developments would be removed, and further illegal building attempts would not be tolerated.

The demolition has affected some residents, including Pastor Chimdi Obwe, who lives in the adjoining Ciarudi area. Obwe alleged that he had been denied access to his home and lost part of his property due to the blockade of the exit route and the demolition of his fence.

The FCTA’s actions are aimed at reasserting administrative control over the affected plots, in line with the recommendations of the ministerial committee. The agency has warned that prosecution may follow if developers continue to ignore the directives. The situation highlights the need for developers to comply with planning regulations and the importance of administrative control in maintaining order in the territory.
