Afenifere demands strict enforcement of night grazing ban by herdsmen

Afenifere calls for strict enforcement of night grazing ban in Southwest

The Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, has called for the strict enforcement of a ban on night grazing by herdsmen in the Southwest region of Nigeria. This development comes after the Chairman of the Council of Fulani Chiefs in the Southwest, Mohammed Abubakar Bambado II, announced the ban earlier this week.

As part of measures to address the issues of killing, abduction, and other activities linked to herders in the region, the council has outlined various necessary steps. In response, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, welcomed the ban on night grazing and the prohibition on carrying firearms, stating that it should be enforced strictly.

Afenifere argued that open grazing is outdated and that animals raised in ranches are generally healthier, safer, and more productive, making the business more profitable without the risks associated with open grazing. The organization urged states with anti-open grazing laws to begin enforcing them.

Additionally, Ajayi advised those interested in livestock farming to establish enclosures, or ranches, for their animals, similar to those in the poultry business. This approach is expected to improve the overall livestock farming industry in the region.

The ban on night grazing and the call for enforcement of anti-open grazing laws are significant steps towards addressing the long-standing issues related to herding in the Southwest region. The move is also seen as a way to promote more productive and safer livestock farming practices. As the region moves forward with the implementation of these measures, it is expected that the safety and security of both herders and local communities will be enhanced.
