Kebbi Violence Linked to Malami as Youths Raise Alarm

A northern youth group has expressed concern over the rise of politically-motivated violence in Kebbi State, Nigeria, citing the recent activities of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, as a contributing factor.

At a press briefing in Kaduna, Muhammad Imam, Director of Media and Public Affairs for the Northern Nigeria Youth Leaders Discussion Forum, stated that Kebbi, once considered a peaceful state in the region, is now experiencing instability. Imam alleged that Malami’s visit to the state was accompanied by armed youths, leading to violent clashes that resulted in injuries and property damage. This incident contradicts Malami’s claim that his visit was solely for a condolence purpose.

The youth group accused Malami of mobilizing unruly crowds before the official start of political campaigns, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The group warned that the trend of using violence as a means of political expression is spreading in northern Nigeria and needs to be addressed to prevent further escalation.

Imam criticized security agencies for what he termed selective enforcement of law and order, pointing out the discrepancy in response between Kaduna and Kebbi states. He urged the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to intervene promptly, emphasizing that Kebbi risks becoming a hotspot for political violence in the region.

The Northern Nigeria Youth Leaders Discussion Forum called on civil society and the media to closely monitor developments in Kebbi State, warning that inaction could embolden political actors to further destabilize the fragile peace. The group’s concerns highlight the need for increased attention to the rising violence in the state and the importance of addressing the root causes of these incidents to prevent further unrest.

The situation in Kebbi State has significant implications for the region’s stability, particularly in the lead-up to elections. The role of security agencies and the responsibility of political leaders to promote peace and stability will be crucial in mitigating the risk of further violence. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it is essential for all stakeholders to prioritize peaceful expression and respect for the law to ensure a stable and secure environment for all citizens.
