Dele Momodu, a member of the African Democratic Congress, has downplayed speculation that former President Goodluck Jonathan may run in the 2027 presidential election on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise program, Momodu noted that certain factions within the PDP remain opposed to Jonathan’s potential return.
He pointed out that recent meetings between Jonathan and other political figures, such as former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, should not be taken as signs of an emerging alliance. According to Momodu, politicians often meet for a variety of reasons, and such interactions do not necessarily indicate a forthcoming partnership. He drew a parallel with a recent meeting between Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and President Bola Tinubu, which had sparked speculation about Kwankwaso’s possible defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress. Momodu emphasized that speculation is inherent in politics and cautioned against jumping to conclusions.
In the context of the 2027 presidential election, Momodu urged a focus on strategy and consensus‑building rather than rumor‑mongering. He suggested that if a consensus cannot be reached, primary elections should be held to determine the party’s candidate, ensuring a democratic process that lets the people decide at the polls.
The speculation surrounding Jonathan’s potential candidacy has persisted, with some interpreting his recent meetings as an indication of interest in running. Momodu’s comments, however, highlight the complexities and uncertainties that characterize Nigerian politics. As the country prepares for the 2027 election, dynamics within the PDP and other parties are likely to continue evolving, influencing the outcome. In the coming months, political parties and candidates will need to navigate these complexities and develop effective strategies to appeal to voters. The election is expected to be highly contested, and it remains to be seen how the speculation about Jonathan’s candidacy will unfold and what impact it will have on the race.
