Onana exit due to poor performance says Manchester United boss

Transfer: Man Utd confirm Onana's new club

Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has provided insight into the departure of goalkeeper Andre Onana from the club. Onana’s performance during his two-season stint at Old Trafford failed to meet the expectations of fans, with the Cameroonian goalkeeper facing criticism for his role in the team’s 15th-place finish in the English Premier League last season.

Onana was initially signed from Inter Milan as a replacement for veteran goalkeeper David De Gea. However, he has now joined Turkish club Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, making way for Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayındır. Notably, Onana’s only appearance this season was in the Carabao Cup second-round exit against Grimsby Town.

Speaking to the press ahead of Manchester United’s upcoming match against Manchester City, Amorim stated, “Onana did great at Inter, but as a club, we needed a change. Sometimes it’s hard to point out why, but the performance, the moment, and the bad luck in some moments were hard on him.” Amorim expressed his well wishes to Onana, saying, “I wish André all the very best.”

Onana’s departure marks a significant change in Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation, with Bayındır now set to take on a more prominent role. The club’s decision to loan out Onana may be seen as an effort to revamp their squad and improve overall performance. As Manchester United prepares to face Manchester City, the team will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing finish last season and make a stronger impact in the current campaign.

The loan move to Trabzonspor provides Onana with an opportunity to regain his form and potentially return to Manchester United in the future. For now, the focus will be on his performance in the Turkish league and how it may impact his chances of returning to the Premier League. With the transfer window now closed, Manchester United will be looking to make the most of their current squad and push for a better finish in the English top flight.
