Nigeria Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway valued N1.8 trillion

Tinubu not marginalising Northern Nigeria, says Umahi — Daily Nigerian

The Nigerian government has embarked on the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, a monumental infrastructure project valued at over N1.8 trillion. Minister of Works, David Umahi, described it as the single largest project ever undertaken in the country during an inspection visit to the project site in Kebbi State. The project, which spans 1,068 kilometers, aims to connect Nigeria, Mali, Togo, and other neighboring countries, boosting socio-economic activities and infrastructure development.

Conceived 47 years ago under the administration of late President Shehu Shagari, the project had lain dormant until President Bola Tinubu’s administration revived it. Umahi commended the president for fulfilling his promise, made during the 2023 general elections, to bring the project to fruition. The minister announced that President Tinubu is expected to visit the project site in May 2026, by which time at least 50 kilometers of the road will be completed, with a total of 130 kilometers expected to be finished by the end of 2026.

To facilitate the project, President Tinubu has approved and released funds for compensating individuals and communities whose lands were acquired. However, beneficiaries must open bank accounts to receive payments, ensuring proper tracking of compensation. The government has also engaged eight Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) to defend the project against potential legal challenges.

Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, praised President Tinubu’s vision and commitment to the project, emphasizing its potential to transform the region and the country. The road will link Illela International Market, unlocking massive business opportunities along the corridor. Goronyo also acknowledged Umahi’s dedication to driving the Renewed Hope Agenda, the president’s initiative to promote infrastructure development and socio-economic growth.

The Kebbi State government has provided logistical and security support for the project, with Governor Nasir Idris investing in security and agriculture to ensure its success. The project’s significance extends beyond Nigeria, as it will connect the country to neighboring nations, fostering regional trade and cooperation. As the project progresses, it is expected to create new opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and improved living standards for communities along the corridor.
