Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has disclosed that the Sokoto and Kebbi states axis of the superhighway project will cost approximately N3 trillion. Umahi made this revelation during an inspection of the 40 kilometers section 1A of the ongoing superhighway project in Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The minister emphasized that the project is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at enhancing road network and train service connectivity across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. This initiative is expected to boost socio-economic development in the region. The projects under this agenda include the 750km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road Corridor, the 1,068km Sokoto-Badagry Road, the Calabar-Abuja superhighway, the 482km TransSaharan road, and the 439km Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe road.
Umahi explained that the Sokoto-Badagry superhighway project, which spans from Illela in Sokoto to Badagry in Lagos, demonstrates President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the lives of citizens and rejuvenating socio-economic activities nationwide. The minister noted that the project is being constructed with concrete roads, lighting, CCTV cameras, health, traffic, and security stations, among other facilities, to ensure prompt response to emergencies.
The minister also highlighted that the current administration has embarked on the reconstruction of a concrete road from Sokoto-Gusau-Funtua-Zaria, as well as other projects such as the Kano-Abuja and Kano-Katsina roads. Umahi assured that all projects are ongoing and that the president has pledged to complete them within the stipulated periods. Specifically, the 120 kilometers of the superhighway project from the Sokoto axis is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Umahi commended the efforts of the Hightech Construction Company Ltd., handling the project, as well as the Chief of Defence Staff, Inspector General of Police, State Security Service, and other security agencies for ensuring the smooth conduct of the project. The minister also appreciated the Sokoto state government for its commitment to the success of federal government projects and urged community members to continue supporting the project handlers.
The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, noted that the Northwest region has benefited significantly from President Tinubu’s initiatives, describing the Sokoto-Badagry superhighway as a “game changer.” The project is expected to attract economic investments, facilitate growth, and uplift social development in the region. With the project’s completion expected within the next five years, it is anticipated to become a major success story for the administration.
