Nollywood actor Bob-Manuel Udokwu has clarified his comments regarding his colleague Pete Edochie, stating that his words were misrepresented in recent reports. In an interview with NollyNow, Udokwu explained that he never made derogatory remarks about Edochie, who is widely regarded as a legendary actor in the Nigerian film industry.
Udokwu stated that he began acting in Nollywood before Edochie, but noted that Edochie’s earlier works, such as his iconic role in the TV series “Things Fall Apart”, predated the Nollywood era. He emphasized that these works should be considered separate from the industry’s later emergence. Udokwu also mentioned that fellow actor Kanayo O. Kanayo had made a similar point in the past.
The actor, who currently serves as Special Adviser on Entertainment, Leisure and Tourism to Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, expressed his deep respect for Pete Edochie, describing him as an elder worthy of honour. Udokwu noted that African culture places a high value on respecting senior figures, and he would never disrespect Edochie.
Udokwu recalled his early roles in Nollywood productions such as “Checkmate” and “When the Sun Sets”, but clarified that he does not consider these works as part of Nollywood’s official beginnings. His clarification comes amid reports that sought to create tension between the two respected actors.
The misunderstanding appears to have arisen from a podcast interview in which Udokwu discussed his career in the context of modern Nollywood. He stressed that he never implied that Edochie was deceiving anyone about his status as an actor. Udokwu’s comments are significant, as they highlight the importance of accuracy and context in reporting on the Nigerian film industry.
The clarification is also notable given the respect and admiration that both Udokwu and Edochie command in the industry. By setting the record straight, Udokwu has helped to maintain a positive and respectful tone in the public discourse about Nollywood and its veteran actors. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for careful reporting and accurate representation of facts in the media.
