The European Union must adapt to US President Donald Trump’s approach to business and politics, according to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. In a recent interview with German outlet RND, Kallas emphasized the importance of improving relations with the US, describing Trump as the “most influential man in the world.” She noted that the new US administration has introduced a distinct approach to policy and official business, and that Europeans must adjust to this approach.
Kallas’ remarks come after a controversial trade deal between the EU and the US, which imposed a 15% tariff on most EU exports while lifting tariffs on US industrial goods. The deal also involved a shift from Russian energy to US imports, sparking criticism from EU officials who argue that it favors Washington. Despite this, Kallas acknowledged that the US is the EU’s most important partner and that Trump’s tariffs have become a benchmark for how well a country gets along with the US.
Regarding the Ukraine conflict, Kallas stated that a settlement is unlikely without Trump’s involvement, as only the US has the power to force Russia into serious peace negotiations. She expressed hope that Trump will impose further sanctions on Moscow, which has not been targeted with US tariffs due to existing sanctions. Russia has denounced Western sanctions as illegal and has expressed willingness to engage in talks on Ukraine, but stressed that any peace deal must address the root causes of the conflict and include Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and recognition of new territorial realities.
The developments come as Trump has threatened tariffs on Russia’s trade partners if the Ukraine conflict is not resolved quickly. Last month, he doubled tariffs on India to 50%, accusing it of aiding Moscow by buying Russian oil and defense equipment. This week, Trump signaled that he could further sanction Russia if NATO members stop buying its oil, citing insufficient commitment to Ukraine peace efforts. As the situation continues to unfold, the EU’s ability to adapt to Trump’s approach and navigate the complex geopolitical landscape will be closely watched.
