Judiciary urged to confront corruption and uphold justice

Don’t be swayed by power, wealth, popularity - Clergy charges Judicial officers

The Anglican Bishop of Ijebu-Southwest diocese, Rt Rev’d Babatunde Ogunbanwo, has urged judicial officers to stand up against corruption and uphold justice, regardless of power, wealth, or popularity. He made this call during a special church service to mark the beginning of the 2025/2026 legal year, held at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta, in Ogun State.

The event was attended by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Chief Judge Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, retired and serving judges, magistrates, and other judicial officers. In his sermon, Rev Ogunbanwo emphasized the importance of acting justly, loving mercy, and working humbly with God, as stated in Micah 6:8. He noted that the public’s trust in the legal system is currently fragile and needs to be rebuilt.

Rev Ogunbanwo stressed that justice is a daily duty, not a once-a-year routine, and that legal authority is a sacred trust that should not be misused. He encouraged judicial officers to be bold and ready to confront the system, stand against corruption, and uphold justice with mercy. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin brings shame to everyone,” he said.

Governor Abiodun welcomed judicial officers to the new legal year, urging them to renew their dedication to a balanced system of justice where the vulnerable find a voice. He emphasized that justice cannot thrive without integrity, impartiality, and courage. The governor assured that his administration will continue to provide necessary support and resources to enhance judicial efficiency and uphold the sanctity of the legal system.

Meanwhile, Chief Judge Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu highlighted the need for all judicial officers to be computer literate, which will enhance service delivery and make the job of judges easier. She noted that most judges and magistrates are already computer literate, and the introduction of e-filing and e-affidavits will further streamline the process.

The beginning of the new legal year serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding justice and integrity in the judicial system. As the judiciary continues to play a crucial role in entrenching democracy, it is essential for judicial officers to remain committed to their duties and work towards rebuilding public trust. With the support of the government and the commitment of judicial officers, the legal system can continue to evolve and provide justice for all.
