The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has revealed that several aspirants are vying for its 2027 presidential ticket, beyond the highly speculated candidates. According to the party’s Deputy National Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, intense internal negotiations and consultations are underway to determine the party’s flagbearer.
While former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde have been mentioned as potential candidates, Osuoha stated that these names are still speculative. The party is currently focused on identifying the most credible candidate through private discussions and stakeholders’ engagements. Other potential aspirants from the South are also holding private talks to position themselves for the ticket.
The PDP’s immediate priority is to hold its national convention to elect new officers who will lead the party for the next four years. During this period, the party will narrow down its list of potential candidates and conduct a free and fair primary to ensure transparency. This approach is aimed at demonstrating the party’s commitment to democracy.
The development comes after Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro listed Jonathan, Obi, and Makinde as being considered for the ticket. Moro also noted that other qualified contenders from the South could still join the race as consultations deepen. The PDP’s efforts to select a candidate are seen as crucial in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election.
As the party moves forward with its internal processes, the outcome of the national convention and subsequent primary elections will be closely watched. The PDP’s ability to conduct a transparent and fair selection process will be key to its success in the upcoming election. With the party’s commitment to democracy and transparency, the stage is set for a competitive and potentially divisive primary election. The eventual candidate will face significant challenges in the general election, making the PDP’s selection process all the more critical.
