The United Kingdom has announced plans to deploy Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Poland to help counter “aerial threats” from Russia. The move comes after Warsaw accused Moscow of a large-scale drone intrusion into its airspace. According to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the jets will join other NATO aircraft, including French Rafales, German Eurofighters, and Danish F-16s, as part of the alliance’s Eastern Sentry operation.
The UK jets will operate from Coningsby airbase in eastern England and will be supported by Voyager air-to-air refueling tankers. Their mission will be to monitor and deter “aerial threats from Russia, including drones.” Starmer emphasized that the deployment is crucial for deterring aggression, securing NATO airspace, and protecting national security and that of its allies. He also accused Russia of “reckless behavior” on the alliance’s eastern flank.
The decision to deploy the Typhoons follows Poland’s claim that at least 19 Russian drones entered its airspace on September 9. Moscow has denied the allegations, with Russian envoy Vassily Nebenzia describing them as “unfounded” during a UN Security Council meeting last week. Poland has also received support from other NATO member states, including the Czech Republic, which has sent three helicopters, while Spain, Italy, and Sweden have pledged additional assistance.
The tensions come as Russia and Belarus are set to conclude their joint Zapad 2025 military exercise, involving around 13,000 troops. Both countries have rejected Western accusations that the drill is a rehearsal for invasion, describing such claims as “hysteria.” Poland, meanwhile, launched its own Iron Defender 25 drill last month, featuring around 30,000 troops, including soldiers from other NATO member states.
The deployment of the Typhoons and other NATO aircraft to Poland is a significant development in the ongoing tensions between Russia and the West. It underscores the commitment of NATO member states to collective defense and their determination to counter perceived threats from Russia. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Russia will respond to the increased military presence in the region.
