A prominent Nigerian politician, Buba Galadima, has expressed concern over an alleged plan by President Bola Tinubu to appoint a retired judge as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Galadima, a chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), stated that the nominee, a recently retired Court of Appeal judge, has a track record of judicial bias and “notoriety.” He warned that this appointment could lead to political instability in the country.
During a live interview on Arise TV, Galadima emphasized that the credibility of the 2027 general elections would be compromised if the judge were to be appointed. He urged the government to reconsider the nomination, citing the potential consequences of such a decision. Galadima also criticized the current administration, alleging that it has disregard for the rule of law.
The NNPP stalwart further accused the current leadership of INEC of being compromised in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He claimed that the electoral body has already been rigged to favor the APC, citing the appointment of an acting national chairman who had previously worked for the party. Galadima argued that these developments pose a threat to the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.
Galadima warned that if the alleged plan goes forward, it could lead to chaos and undermine the electoral process. He also expressed concerns about the government’s intentions to destabilize the opposition, stating that the current administration is not prepared to organize a free and fair election. The NNPP chieftain expressed confidence in his party’s chances, particularly in the state of Kano, where he claimed that former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso remains a popular figure.
The allegations made by Galadima highlight the ongoing concerns about the independence and credibility of INEC, as well as the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the appointment of a new INEC chairman is seen as a critical step in ensuring the transparency and fairness of the electoral process. The developments will be closely watched by both domestic and international observers, who will be monitoring the situation to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free and fair manner.
