The Zamfara State Government has established the State Persons With Disability Board, aimed at promoting equal access to opportunities and safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities. According to the Secretary to the Government, Abubakar Nakwada, the move follows recent amendments to the state law designed to protect individuals with disabilities from discrimination.
The establishment of the board is in line with Governor Dauda Lawal’s commitment to social welfare and inclusive governance. The amended law includes key changes, such as substituting the board’s chairman with an executive chairman and mandating that members be persons with disabilities. This ensures that the board’s activities serve the interests of the targeted groups.
Governor Lawal has appointed Alhaji Usman Nahuche, a retired permanent secretary and member of the Deaf cluster, as the pioneer chairman of the board. Other members include representatives from various disability clusters, such as spinal cord, deaf, physically challenged, and blind individuals, as well as a representative for women.
The board’s establishment reflects the governor’s commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusiveness. The appointees have been charged with working diligently to uplift the living standards of persons with disabilities across the state. Governor Lawal expressed appreciation to development partners and stakeholders who supported the law amendment process.
The establishment of the board is a significant step towards promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in Zamfara State. With the new board in place, individuals with disabilities can expect increased access to opportunities and protection from discrimination. The state government’s efforts to promote inclusivity and social justice are likely to have a positive impact on the lives of persons with disabilities, and the board’s work will be closely watched in the coming months.
