Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that singers from 23 countries will take part in the upcoming Intervision song contest, a Russian alternative to Eurovision. The move follows Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which led to its ban from the Eurovision competition. Intervision is being positioned as a way to revive international performance opportunities for Russian artists.
Lavrov said that a participant from the United States will join the contest, noting that the U.S. administration considers the involvement a private matter for the performer. However, the United States will not have a jury seat nor send an official delegation. Sergei Kiriyenko, First Deputy Head of the Russian Presidential Administration, added that some potential participants have been barred from taking part because of political restrictions imposed by their own governments.
The contest is scheduled for September 20, 2025, in Moscow and will feature performers from more than 20 nations, including BRICS members, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and countries from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Lavrov emphasized that the event aims to promote Russia and its people, showcasing the nation’s culture and identity.
Intervision is being held amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia has launched thousands of drones, glide bombs, and missiles at Ukrainian targets over the past two weeks. Despite months of U.S.-led peace initiatives, a settlement remains distant, and previous U.S. ultimatums to President Vladimir Putin have passed without clear consequences.
The contest has attracted interest as a potential tool for Russia to boost its soft power and cultural influence on the international stage. With a diverse lineup of performers and broad participation, Intervision is expected to draw significant attention and scrutiny. As the event approaches, it remains uncertain how the global community will receive it and what effect it will have on Russia’s reputation and relationships with other countries.
