NMDPRA, FCCPC Set Up 10-Man C’ttee To Address Consumers Complaints

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have formed a joint committee to strengthen consumer protection in the energy sector. This initiative responds to recurring complaints about competitive practices and service delivery in the oil and gas industry.

According to an NMDPRA statement, a 10‑member Joint‑Technical Working Committee was inaugurated to share market data, monitor and investigate anti‑competitive behavior, and ensure adequate consumer protection. The committee was represented by Ogbugo Ukoha, Executive Director of Distribution Systems, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure (DSSRI), who acted on behalf of NMDPRA Chief Executive Farouk Ahmed at the ceremony in Abuja. Ukoha emphasized that the committee’s primary goal is to address concerns related to competition and service delivery within the sector.

Leadership of the committee includes FCCPC Deputy Director of Surveillance and Investigation Omagu Nwachukwu and Charles Nwachukwu, Head of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre at NMDPRA. Together, they will identify potential threats to the sector and forward any issues to the top management of both organizations.

The collaboration aims to create a level playing field for operators, prevent monopolies, and establish procedures for prosecution when abuse is confirmed after investigation. This joint effort underscores the commitment of both regulatory bodies to protect consumers and promote fair competition in the energy market. It is expected to encourage operators to comply with regulatory requirements and ensure that consumers receive fair treatment.

As the energy sector evolves, this partnership will play a crucial role in shaping its future and maintaining a stable market environment. The steps taken by NMDPRA and FCCPC to enhance consumer protection will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and consumers alike.
