Zimbabwe tax authority vows to fight corruption

Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) Acting Commissioner General, Batsirayi Chadzingwa, has emphasized the need to reignite tax morale in all sectors of the economy. He noted that technology has made it easier to detect corrupt activities, including false declarations, understating profits, and tax evasion, which have been prevalent among both taxpayers and tax administrators.

Chadzingwa made these remarks during a breakfast meeting with stakeholders at the close of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo. He stressed that corruption is a two-way street, involving both the giver and receiver, and warned the public against enticing ZIMRA officials into unethical conduct.

The Acting Commissioner General highlighted the importance of cultivating a culture of complying with tax laws to facilitate the country’s development. He emphasized that professionalism, innovativeness, commitment, integrity, transparency, and fairness are essential for success, and that vices like corruption, smuggling, and tax evasion should be dealt with using a zero-tolerance approach.

Chadzingwa also cautioned against the practice of bribing ZIMRA officials, stating that it is unnecessary and unethical. He noted that evading taxes can be more expensive in the long run, as those caught will face severe penalties. Instead, he encouraged taxpayers to comply with the prescribed terms, as the revenue collected is crucial for the country’s infrastructural development.

The value of tax collection cannot be underestimated, Chadzingwa said, as it enables the government to fund key national priorities such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare. He thanked those who consistently meet their tax obligations and assured those who are still finding their way that ZIMRA is available to provide guidance and assistance.

In his address, Chadzingwa reinforced the significance of tax compliance in building Zimbabwe’s legacy and paving the way for future generations. He encouraged early engagement with ZIMRA to avoid penalties and interest, and reiterated the authority’s commitment to supporting taxpayers in their journey towards full compliance.
