Kano Governor Abba Yusuf slams predecessor over failed projects

Gov. Yusuf challenges Ganduje to name 4 projects completed in his 8-year tenure — Daily Nigerian

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has criticized his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, for failing to implement meaningful development projects during his eight-year tenure. Speaking at a ceremony to distribute job offers to 4,315 teachers under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) program, Mr. Yusuf challenged Mr. Ganduje to identify four completed projects from his administration.

The current governor alleged that the previous government mishandled state resources, oppressed civil servants and pensioners, and sold job offers to teachers. He stated that his administration inherited an empty treasury, with a state account showing a negative balance of N9,075 at the time of handover. Mr. Yusuf claimed that his government has saved billions of naira by blocking leakages and is now channeling these funds into development projects, including teacher recruitment, road construction, and school renovation.

The governor directed the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to recruit an additional batch of BESDA teachers and announced soft loans of N100,000 each for 2,000 teachers under the board. He emphasized that despite criticism from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), his administration is committed to delivering development projects and improving the lives of Kano State residents.

Mr. Yusuf’s comments come as his administration continues to implement various projects aimed at improving education, infrastructure, and economic development in the state. The BESDA program, which aims to improve basic education services, is one of the key initiatives of the current government. With the recruitment of new teachers and the provision of soft loans, the government hopes to enhance the quality of education and support the economic well-being of teachers in the state.

The controversy surrounding the previous administration’s handling of state resources and projects has sparked debate in the state, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability in governance. As the current government continues to implement its development agenda, it remains to be seen how the opposition and other stakeholders will respond to these efforts.
