Cholera outbreak: Bauchi govt set up committee to tackle rising cases, deaths

A cholera outbreak has hit Bauchi state in Nigeria, affecting 14 out of 20 local government areas and resulting in 58 fatalities. According to recent data, there are 258 new cases of people suffering from the disease in the state. The situation has prompted the state government to take action, with the inauguration of two committees aimed at tackling the outbreak.

The State Cholera Steering Committee and the State Technical Working Committee were inaugurated by the state deputy governor, Auwal Mohammed Jatau. Jatau expressed regret over the recurring cholera outbreaks, which have claimed lives, disrupted livelihoods, and put a strain on the state’s health system. He emphasized that the outbreaks are often preventable with timely interventions, coordinated responses, and improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene.

The deputy governor noted that despite the state government’s efforts to combat the disease, cholera remains a significant public health threat. The establishment of the cholera steering committee is seen as a crucial step in achieving the desired objectives, including leading the state’s multi-sectoral response to outbreaks and driving long-term prevention strategies. The committee’s efforts will be aligned with the National Cholera Control Plan and the goals of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Jatau urged the committee members to ensure effective surveillance, early detection, and rapid response to outbreaks. The nomination of the committee members is a recognition of their expertise and dedication to the task. The state government hopes that the committee will play a key role in preventing further outbreaks and reducing the impact of the disease on the community.

The cholera outbreak in Bauchi state highlights the need for sustained efforts to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene in the region. The state government’s actions, including the establishment of the cholera steering committee, are crucial steps towards addressing the crisis. As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential for the government and health authorities to work together to prevent further outbreaks and protect the health and well-being of the population.
