Nigeria Train Derailment Prompts Safety Review

NRC orders safety measures ahead of Abuja–Kaduna service resumption — Daily Nigerian

The Nigerian Railway Corporation’s Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has emphasized the importance of adhering to operational directives, particularly caution orders, for staff of the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service. This directive comes after an in-house investigation into the August 26 train derailment. Dr. Opeifa presented the key findings to staff at Idu Station, highlighting the need for strict compliance with safety protocols.

The investigation’s focus on safety has led to the implementation of a mandatory four-day refresher training for all Abuja-Kaduna Train Service staff, set to commence on September 22. This training is a prerequisite for the resumption of services on the corridor. Dr. Opeifa also reviewed the progress of recovery efforts and outlined plans for the safe recommencement of operations.

During a prayer session, the Managing Director expressed gratitude for the preservation of lives during the incident and commended the staff for their coordination during the emergency response. Additionally, he reaffirmed the approved 95% salary increase for staff, which is scheduled to be implemented before the end of the year. Dr. Opeifa cautioned locomotive drivers against issuing strike notices, emphasizing the disruptive impact on national service delivery.

The Nigerian Union of Railway Workers appreciated the Managing Director’s approval of weekend incentives for Abuja-Kaduna Train Service personnel. Dr. Opeifa was accompanied by directors from the civil engineering, corporate planning, and mechanical departments during the meeting. The emphasis on safety and staff welfare underscores the Nigerian Railway Corporation’s commitment to providing reliable and efficient services. With the refresher training and plans for service resumption in place, the corporation aims to restore public confidence in the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service.
