President Bola Tinubu will join prominent Yoruba monarchs, political leaders, and thousands of Ibadan residents to celebrate the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. The week-long celebration, which begins on September 22, 2025, will showcase the rich cultural heritage of Ibadan.
According to Chief Bayo Oyero, Chairman of the Planning and Organizing Committee, the coronation ceremony will be a “momentous cultural and traditional milestone” that will attract dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond. The event will take place at the historic Mapo Hall grounds on September 26, 2025.
The coronation program includes inter-religious prayers, a cultural fiesta, a coronation lecture, and a thanksgiving service. The cultural fiesta, scheduled for September 23, will feature Ibadan traditions, music, and arts at the Olubadan Stadium. A coronation lecture by renowned scholar Professor Toyin Falola will be held on September 24 at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
The grand coronation ceremony will be preceded by a mega praise and worship concert at the Civic Centre, Idi-Ape, on September 25, which coincides with Oba Ladoja’s 81st birthday celebration. A thanksgiving service will be held on September 28 at the Catholic Cathedral, Oke Padre, Ibadan, while a special Jumat service will take place on October 3 at the Ojaba Central Mosque.
The state government has assured that elaborate security measures are in place, with over 2,000 security operatives deployed to ensure a hitch-free and peaceful coronation. The event will be broadcast live on state and national television, as well as selected radio stations, with social media livestreaming for Nigerians in the diaspora.
The coronation of Oba Ladoja is seen as a significant cultural and traditional milestone, not only for Ibadan but also for the Yoruba people and Nigeria as a whole. The event is expected to attract dignitaries from across the country, including state governors, members of the diplomatic corps, and revered Yoruba monarchs. The state government has acknowledged the critical role of Governor Seyi Makinde in facilitating the coronation, praising his timely release of funds, moral support, and respect for Ibadan tradition.
