Nigeria’s Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, will lead the country’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States, from September 22 to 28. This development was made public by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, in a statement released on Saturday in Abuja.

The UNGA session marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, and Vice-President Shettima is scheduled to join other world leaders at the global event. He will participate in the high-level general debates from September 23 to 28, alongside other dignitaries. On behalf of President Bola Tinubu, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement on September 24, between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. New York time.

In addition to the general debates, the Vice-President will attend a special event on climate change, hosted by the UN Secretary-General, on September 24. During this event, Nigeria is expected to announce its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Shettima will also attend a high-level roundtable on adequate and affordable housing, hosted by the President of Kenya, and engage in bilateral meetings and other events.

After attending the UNGA, Vice-President Shettima will travel to Frankfurt, Germany, where he will meet with officials from Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria. The Vice-President’s participation in the UNGA and subsequent meetings underscores Nigeria’s commitment to global cooperation and addressing pressing international issues, such as climate change and affordable housing.

The 80th session of the UNGA provides a platform for world leaders to discuss and address global challenges, and Nigeria’s delegation, led by Vice-President Shettima, is expected to play an active role in these discussions. The outcomes of the session will likely have significant implications for international relations, global governance, and Nigeria’s position on the world stage.
