Nigeria is facing a crisis of governance, according to Dr. Sunday Andrew Opoke, the Young Progressives Party’s governorship candidate in Ebonyi State and National Coordinator of the National Coalition Alliance. In a recent interview, Opoke warned that the country is sinking into a “dark age of hunger, insecurity, and failed leadership,” emphasizing the need for urgent action to rescue the nation.
The National Coalition Alliance, in partnership with the African Democratic Congress and other stakeholders, is developing a broad platform to address bad governance ahead of the 2027 general elections. Opoke cited the deterioration of public services, including education and healthcare, as evidence of the country’s decline. Many government schools have been abandoned, and the public health sector is dysfunctional, with even ministers of health unable to use Nigerian hospitals.
The coalition’s proposed reforms focus on five key areas: developing capacity in governance, expanding civic education, establishing rural “smart hubs” to deliver education and technology, promoting wealth creation through a night-time economy, and harnessing Nigeria’s human capital in sports, technology, and enterprise. On September 26, the coalition will unveil its Roadmap to Good Governance, a practical template for development, at the People’s Club in Abakaliki.
Opoke acknowledged that previous coalitions have failed to bring about meaningful change, but emphasized that Nigerians must continue to demand reforms. He warned that if leaders fail to provide good governance, the population may be pushed towards revolt. The National Coalition Alliance’s efforts aim to provide a roadmap for genuine development, similar to that of countries like America, the UK, or Japan.
The situation in Nigeria is dire, with widespread discontent and frustration over the lack of basic services. The National Coalition Alliance’s initiative is seen as a significant step towards addressing the country’s governance crisis. As Opoke noted, the mission is simple: to rescue Nigeria from hunger, insecurity, and corruption, and replace them with genuine good governance. The success of this effort will depend on the ability of the coalition to mobilize support and effect meaningful change.
