The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of 17 candidates for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, scheduled for February 12, 2026. The announcement was made by Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja. This publication follows the conclusion of the statutory period for withdrawal and substitution of candidates, as required by law.
Earlier, on August 18, INEC had published the personal particulars of candidates who emerged from party primaries. A total of 17 political parties submitted their candidates’ details by the deadline of 6 p.m. on August 11. According to Olumekun, the final list includes each candidate’s political party, age, gender and academic qualifications. The comprehensive list has been uploaded to INEC’s website and social‑media platforms for public information and scrutiny.
With the final list now public, no further withdrawals or replacements will be permitted, except in the event of the death of a candidate or running mate before election day, as provided by Section 34(1) of the Electoral Act. The release of the list marks a significant step in the preparations for the FCT Area Council elections, offering voters and stakeholders an opportunity to examine the credentials of those seeking elective office.
INEC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the integrity and transparency of the electoral process. As the elections approach, the commission will continue to play a critical role in guaranteeing that the process remains free, fair and credible.
